On 28 December 2012, section 4AA of the Crimes Act 1914 was amended to increase the amount of a penalty unit from $110 to $170.
This means that, amongst other things, under the reforms to the Privacy Act due to commence on 12 March 2014, the maximum penalty amount for a serious or repeated interference with the privacy of an individual will be $340,000 for individuals and $1.7 million for entities
